Wrexham are using the international break to do two things at once: give some players a much-needed reset and gradually bring the squad back together ahead of the next league fixture.
Manager Phil Parkinson said the break has been valuable after a hectic start to the Championship season, with players who had logged heavy minutes given time off last week while injured players continued their rehabilitation work at the club. That included the likes of Callum Doyle, who had played every game, as Wrexham tried to balance recovery with the need to keep everyone ready for the next run of matches.
International absences spread across four countries
Five Wrexham players were away on international duty last week, with the absences spread across Wales, Burkina Faso, Gabon and Jamaica. Danny Ward and Kieffer Moore were among the players linked to Wales, while Issa Kabore, Jacques Ekomie and Bailey Cadamarteri were also away with their respective national teams.
Parkinson said the club is now moving into the next phase of the break, with those who had time off back in training this week and the international group returning in stages. He stressed that the process is being handled carefully, with some players needing a couple of days to recover after their games before fully rejoining the group.
Behind closed doors on Friday
To keep the squad sharp, Wrexham are scheduled to play a behind-closed-doors game on Friday. Parkinson said that is important for the players who have not been away, giving them 11 v 11 game-time so the team stays where it needs to be before competitive action resumes.
Wrexham last played on Saturday September 19, when they beat Southampton 2-1. Their next league match is away to Derby County on Saturday October 10, so the club still has a few weeks to rebuild rhythm and fitness while international duty, recovery work and training all overlap.
For Parkinson, the priority is clear: let the key players recharge, get the internationals back in stages and make sure the group is ready when league football returns.
