Tyquan Thornton has shown the kind of downfield ability that can matter in fantasy football, but the Week 4 setup points to a sit. The Kansas City receiver is still working in a limited role, and his production depends heavily on a small number of deep connections with Patrick Mahomes.
That makes volume the key issue. Thornton caught all four of his targets for 86 yards in Week 2 against Indianapolis, but he was held to a 4.2 fantasy score in Week 3. Even in a passing game that can produce usable weeks, the target distribution in Kansas City still runs through Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy more often than it does Thornton.
Why the Week 4 matchup is tough
The matchup does Thornton no favors. Las Vegas has not allowed a wide receiver touchdown through three games, which is a strong signal for a player whose value is tied to splash plays rather than steady target volume. If the deep ball does not connect, Thornton can disappear quickly from a fantasy lineup.
Patrick Mahomes was a full participant at Thursday's practice after carrying a knee issue into practice again, so Kansas City should have its quarterback in place. Even so, that does not change the basic Thornton question: can he turn limited chances into enough production to justify starting him?
Right now, the answer is no. Thornton has the kind of profile that can swing a week on one or two plays, but the combination of modest usage and a defense that has suppressed wide receiver touchdowns makes him a risky play in Week 4. Unless a fantasy lineup is desperate for upside, the safer move is to sit Tyquan Thornton.
