Matt Reeves Batman production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Reeves steps away to focus on a family matter. Warner Bros and DC Studios announced the move on Monday, adding another hold to a sequel that had already been delayed twice before reaching its current premiere window.
February 18, 2028
DC Studios said, “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.” It also said, “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.” That language matters because it points to a pause, not a shutdown, even as the schedule has already stretched from October 3, 2025 to October 1, 2027 and then to February 18, 2028.
Robert Pattinson Returns
Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne, with Andy Serkis back as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell back as Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin. Jeffrey Wright will reprise James Gordon, Jayme Lawson will reprise Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham will reprise Officer Martinez. The lineup shows Warner Bros and DC Studios are still treating the sequel as a full continuation of The Batman, not a reset.
May and June Filming
The movie started production in May, with filming in London beginning in June and pictures from Glasgow in June showing the city transformed into Gotham City. That gives the pause real operational weight: this is not a script note sitting on a desk, but a film already in motion with cast, locations, and post-production planning tied to Reeves’ schedule. The film had been moved after the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, then pushed again to give Reeves more time for post-production and to fit a Presidents' Day release window.
$772 Million Pressure
The Batman earned more than $772 million at the global box office in March 2022, so the sequel enters this pause with a commercial floor already set by the first film. A temporary stop does not erase that demand, but it does add uncertainty to a release plan that has already absorbed multiple shifts. For now, the practical read is simple: Warner Bros and DC Studios are protecting Reeves’ time and keeping the project alive, while the February 18, 2028 date becomes the number to watch.
