City of Alexandria Sets October 12 Holiday Closures

City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 12 for the October 12 holiday, and several public services will shift to holiday schedules. For residents trying to reach a counter, catch a bus, or visit a clinic, the day’s rules are different across city, court, transit, and museum systems.

The City of Alexandria observes the date as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a change it made in 2019. Virginia still designates the same Monday in October as Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day, so the closure lines up with a day that carries different labels depending on which government is setting the calendar.

City offices and schools

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Monday. Students will have no school, and staff will observe a Professional Learning Day for the same date.

DASH bus service will run on a Saturday-Sunday schedule, and Lines 102, 103, and 104 will not operate. DASH Administrative Offices will also be closed. Riders using the King Street Trolley still have service from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., including holidays.

Courts, DMV and clinics

The General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will be closed. State-run offices in Alexandria, including the courts and DMV, will also be closed, while more than 50 services remain available 24/7 online at dmv.virginia.gov.

Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed as well. AWLA will stay open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with adoption hours beginning at noon.

Museums and holiday hours

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday. All other Alexandria Historic Museums will be closed.

The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays, and fees continue to accrue on Saturdays and Sundays but not on holidays. For anyone planning a visit or a pickup, Monday follows the holiday rules, not the weekend ones.
