Florida State and Louisville meet tonight in an ACC matchup that feels important for different reasons. Florida State are trying to steady themselves after a mixed start, while Louisville’s season has been shaped by a recurring problem: close games that have slipped away.
Mike Norvell’s team enters at 3-2 and 1-1 in ACC play, which is a far more stable position than the turbulence Florida State have lived through since their 13-0 season in 2023. After falling to 2-10 in 2024 and then 5-7 in 2025, the Seminoles have at least shown signs of response this year, with wins over New Mexico State and Virginia sitting alongside losses to SMU and Alabama.
Louisville keep finding the same painful margin
The bigger warning sign belongs to Louisville. The Cardinals are 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, but the record does not fully tell the story. Their three defeats have all come by three points, leaving them with nine points total separating them from a much more convincing start.
That kind of pattern matters because it usually points to late-game detail rather than a complete lack of quality. Louisville have shown they can compete, and their win over SMU 41-31 was proof they can handle a strong opponent. They also beat Villanova, and in the past they have shown they can produce big results, including a win over Miami last season. But too often this year, the finishing has not matched the fight.
Florida State need control, not just a result
Florida State’s recent form suggests they are still searching for consistency, even if the results have improved compared with the recent past. They opened with a 34-17 win over New Mexico State, then lost 27-24 at home to SMU and 50-36 to Alabama before responding with a 34-7 win over Central Arkansas and a 38-7 victory over Virginia.
That sequence shows a team that can look sharp and forceful when it gets on top, but also one that has not yet removed the uncertainty from its performances. For Norvell, the task is not only to win another game, but to make Florida State look more secure for longer stretches.
Louisville, meanwhile, will feel that if they can get this game into the fourth quarter, they give themselves a real chance to flip the narrative. Their season has already been defined by the narrowest of margins, and tonight offers another test of whether they can finally make one of those tight finishes go their way.
For Florida State, the challenge is simpler on paper but harder in practice: maintain control, avoid the late lapse, and leave no room for Louisville’s close-game habit to decide the outcome. In a matchup between two teams still trying to establish momentum, the final minutes may matter more than anything that comes before them.
