Some Disney Parks Fans Pan Avengers Campus Concrete Design

Avengers Campus opened in June 2021, and some Disney Parks fans were quick to argue that it felt more like a concrete plaza than a Marvel destination. The criticism has resurfaced in a recent Reddit conversation that put the land’s design and limited activities back under the microscope.

One guest called it "the worst land in all of California Adventure, maybe even the whole resort." Another said, "Then you get to Avengers Campus and it’s pretty mediocre." Those reactions matter because the land was built to let guests join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, not just walk past a themed frontage.

A Marvel land built around training

Avengers Campus replaced A Bug’s Land, which permanently closed in September 2018, and opened after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The land was inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and built as a training facility, with Tony Stark turning one of his father’s former Stark Industries facilities into a headquarters for the next generation of superheroes.

That backstory gave Disney a flexible canvas, but it also left the land open to a familiar complaint: the concept reads more like an institutional outpost than a destination. Guests who expected something closer to a full-scale world ended up with a place that some now describe as a pass-through on the way to other parts of California Adventure.

Concrete beside Cars Land

One guest said, "I think the fact that it is right next to Cars Land makes it even worse," while another said, "You are IN Radiator Springs! And then you walk into … a big plaza of concrete." The comparison is brutal, and it lands because Cars Land sells a dense, immersive environment while Avengers Campus leans on industrial buildings and plain architecture.

Another fan wrote, "Part of the problem is that Avengers are associated with New York. And we’re in a park in California. But the Campus fails to even feel like New York," and one Reddit user called the area "Avengers Business Park." That is the real friction here: a Marvel land can carry the brand, but not every design choice carries the sense of place.

WEB SLINGERS and the gap

WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure remains the land’s main attraction, sending guests to shoot virtual webs at runaway Spider-Bots, while Avengers Headquarters, the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, the Ancient Sanctum, Pym Test Kitchen, Pym Tasting Lab, superhero meet-and-greets, and live entertainment fill out the area. A recent El-Balad.com report on Robert Downey Jr. returns for 2028 Avengers Campus rides points to how Disney is still looking for ways to deepen the draw.

One Reddit user said the land is "one of the worst lands at any Disney property," and another called it "the worst land in all of California Adventure, maybe even the whole resort." Those are harsh verdicts, but they match the wider complaint: Avengers Campus gives guests Marvel branding, yet some visitors still leave wanting more to do, more texture, and less concrete.

For now, that is the practical read for anyone heading to Disneyland Resort: Avengers Campus is a short stop for some guests, not the all-day destination its premise suggested in June 2021.
