Bucks and Pacers meet in preseason finale at Gainbridge Fieldhouse — Pacers Game is the last tune-up before the real questions begin

This is the kind of Pacers Game that matters less for the scoreline than for the mood it leaves behind. The Milwaukee Bucks arrive at Gainbridge Fieldhouse trying to stitch together cohesion in an essentially brand new roster, while the Indiana Pacers are trying to look like a team that has finally turned the page after last season’s 19-win collapse.

It is the final preseason tune-up for both teams, which means the usual caveats apply. Nobody is handing out trophies for October polish. But there is still a difference between a team easing into the regular season and a team that looks as if it is still searching for basic rhythm. The Bucks, after going 1-3 in the preseason and losing their previous game to the Chicago Bulls, fall squarely into that second category.

The Pacers are in a more interesting place. They opened the preseason by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves before losing to the Atlanta Hawks and the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the bigger story is what they now have back. Tyrese Haliburton missed last season while recovering from a torn Achilles, and Indiana spent most of that campaign collecting just 19 wins without its franchise point guard. His return changes the entire conversation.

Haliburton changes the temperature immediately

That is because Haliburton is not simply another starter sliding back into the lineup. He is the reason the Pacers can talk about postseason play without sounding delusional. He looked the part in his preseason return against the Oklahoma City Thunder, producing 24 points and three assists in 18 minutes. Those numbers do not settle every question, but they do tell you enough. He still has the ability to bend a game quickly, and Indiana’s ceiling looks very different with him on the floor.

For the Pacers, the additions of Kelly Oubre Jr. and Larry Nance Jr. only sharpen the expectation. This is no longer a roster built around survival. It is a roster that is supposed to be aiming higher, even if the preseason results have been mixed. A 1-2 preseason record is not a crisis. A second straight season of sitting around and waiting for something to happen would be.

The Bucks, by contrast, are operating from a far less comfortable position. A 1-3 preseason record is not damning on its own, but it does underline the obvious truth: new groups do not magically become coherent because the calendar says the regular season is near. Chemistry has to be earned. Roles have to be clarified. And in the preseason, the team still searching for its shape is usually the team that looks a little lost.

So yes, this is only the preseason finale. But it still carries a point. The Bucks are trying to find themselves. The Pacers are trying to prove they are back. That is why this Pacers Game matters more than a routine October box score. One team is hoping for a functioning identity. The other is hoping its most important player has already started restoring one.
