Manchester City team news has been sharpened by Enzo Maresca’s suggestion that Erling Haaland will need a rest soon, leaving his starting place against Ipswich in doubt. With the team to be announced at 1.45pm BST on Saturday, October 17, the main question is whether City push their leading forward again or take the opportunity to protect him.
Haaland has already played in all but one Manchester City game across three competitions this season, and the workload has been building. He did not feature in last month’s Carabao Cup third round win over Norwich, then limped off against Portugal on October 4 before starting all four of Norway’s Nations League fixtures during the extended autumn international break.
Maresca: the rest issue is becoming harder to ignore
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Maresca made it clear that rotation is now on the table. “At some point we probably need to give him rest, some days off,” he said, stressing that the issue applies to several players rather than Haaland alone.
“We are thinking about this not just with Erling because we have players, unfortunately or fortunately, they are playing all the games with us and all the games with the international teams,” Maresca explained. He then listed Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, Marc Guehi, Erling and Ruben Dias as examples of players who may need managing.
That matters because Manchester City do not have a natural replacement for Haaland. When he is available, he is the obvious focal point of the attack, and City’s structure tends to look very different without him. The problem for the manager is timing: resting a player of Haaland’s importance is always a football decision, but it is also a selection call that can shape the entire tone of the match.
Why Ipswich may not be the ideal game for rotation
On paper, Ipswich is the immediate fixture in front of City, but the more obvious rotation window may come against AEK Athens at home on October 20. That looks like a more natural moment to give Haaland a break, especially with the Champions League schedule in mind and with City still juggling demands across three competitions.
Even so, the manager’s comments leave the door open to a change against Ipswich. If Haaland is left out, it would be a strong sign that City are prioritising the bigger picture and accepting that six points in the league race cannot come at the cost of overloading their most important striker.
For now, the answer will arrive when Manchester City’s team is named before the 3pm kick-off. Until then, the Haaland question is the biggest selection issue in the build-up to a match that suddenly feels more significant than a routine league appointment.
