Peg Munson and Mel Owens are over. Munson said on Wednesday, October 21 that she ended the relationship she formed with Owens during The Golden Bachelor season 2, closing a year-long run that ended with a televised commitment ring, not an engagement.
“I did have to make the difficult decision to step away from the relationship. Sometimes even when there’s love, it just doesn’t turn out the way we hoped,” Munson said in an Instagram statement. She added that she is focusing on healing her heart, herself, and her health, and said the split is “not the end of [her] story” but “the beginning of a new chapter.”
Last November and the ring
Last November’s finale gave Munson Mel Owens’ final rose on The Golden Bachelor season 2 finale, along with a 3.5-carat diamond commitment ring designed by Neil Lane. That setup left the pair publicly tied to a future without the formal step of an engagement, and Munson later said they had talked through what life together would look like in real time.
“We were basically on the same page,” she said in an interview after the finale. She also said they did not want to move into a marriage or engagement and then say three months later that it had not worked out, and that they wanted something with a firm foundation they could build on for the rest of their lives.

Munson said the breakup had been building for 30 days before she posted publicly. In a video statement, she told viewers, “I’m really sorry that I haven’t spoken out sooner but it’s been a really difficult 30 days for me.” She also said, “As a lot of you guys know, I went on The Golden Bachelor hoping to find love and I did.”
That makes the split less like a sudden turn and more like the end point of a relationship the pair had already tried to define carefully. Munson said she remains grateful for the experience and wishes Owens the best of luck, which is the clearest sign that this is a clean break rather than a public fight.
