Manchester United have identified David Raum as their top left-back target for the January transfer window, and the RB Leipzig defender has reportedly already given the green light to a move to Old Trafford.

That makes this one of the clearest early transfer stories around United’s winter planning. The club are short of senior left-back options, with Luke Shaw the only senior recognised specialist in the role and Patrick Dorgu viewed internally as more of a winger.

The timing matters as well. Earlier in October, Fraser Fletcher reported that Raum had already signalled his willingness to join United in January, while Fabrizio Romano had previously flagged the German international as one to watch because of his contract situation.

Why United have moved early

This is not a sudden idea. Simon Stone has said the club’s recruitment department is working on potential January targets because it is accepted that the strategy of not signing left-back competition for Luke Shaw, and striking support for Benjamin Sesko, was flawed.

That helps explain why United are now pushing this position to the top of the list. A club of this size can cope with short-term uncertainty in some areas, but left-back is not one of them when senior cover is so limited.

Raum’s contract situation also adds another layer. At 28 years old, and with 40 caps and 28 assists to his name, he would enter the January window with only six months left on his deal, which could make him a more affordable option than a typical mid-season move.

Raum fits the profile United need

Romano’s assessment also underlines why United are watching him closely. He described Raum as a player with international experience who has done very well for Red Bull Leipzig, and noted that several top clubs around Europe are looking at left-backs.

For United, the appeal is straightforward. They need a reliable senior option now, not a long-term debate about a position that has already caused planning problems. If the January move is viable, Raum would give them immediate competition and help restore balance on the left side of the squad.

For now, the key question is not whether United need help there. It is whether they can turn that need into a deal quickly enough to make a difference in the January transfer window.
