Cate Blanchett was on the sofa when Prince William made a surprise entrance on The Graham Norton Show, turning a Friday night chat show into a carefully timed Earthshot Prize showcase. The audience reacted with cheers and gasps as Graham Norton brought William out after discussing the initiative.
The Graham Norton Show sofa
Prince William joined Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham on the special edition, which airs on Friday at 22.40 on One. That puts the appearance in prime-time territory for a prize that William set up in 2020 to celebrate and scale solutions that will repair the planet.
Graham Norton moved the conversation from the prize itself to William's support for Aston Villa and his love of Christopher Nolan films before inviting him on stage. The setup mattered because it folded a climate prize into a mainstream entertainment format without stripping out the competition element that drives the Earthshot Prize.
Five Earthshots, £1m each
The Earthshot Prize has five Earthshots: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. Each winner receives £1m, and William has said he will stay committed to the prize until 2030. That structure makes the show appearance more than a publicity stop; it is another push for a prize built around clear categories and a hard cash award.
The guests also talked about the need to pair optimism and urgency when tackling climate change. That line sits right at the center of the problem here: the programme is upbeat television, while the subject is a climate crisis that needs faster action than a chat show can provide.
Mumbai in November
William drew inspiration from John F Kennedy's Moonshot project, and the prize has already produced winners such as Lagos Fashion Week in 2025, recognised for pushing designers toward sustainability in one of the world's most wasteful industries. At last year's ceremony, William said the winners were “proof that progress is possible.”
This year's Earthshot Prize winners will be announced at a ceremony in Mumbai in November, which is the real next step after Friday's television special. The show appearance keeps attention on the prize now, but the prize itself still has to land on the stage where the £1m awards are handed out.
