The body remained at the scene on Saturday morning, while a senior investigating officer was appointed and an incident room was established at Ronanstown Garda station. The Office of the State Pathologist was notified, and the Garda Technical Bureau was due to carry out a technical examination.

William Carey, a Sinn Féin councillor, said: “I just feel for the family. My thoughts would go out for any family of any person who is found in those circumstances.”

Gardaí said it was investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery, and a Garda source said the case was being treated as suspicious. Investigating officers believe the man may have been murdered, but the findings of a postmortem will determine the course of the inquiry.

How the body came to be at the waste-recycling facility is the question left to answer. The postmortem and the technical examination are the next steps that will shape whether the case moves from a suspicious-death inquiry toward a homicide investigation.
