Gunfire erupted just before 10 p.m. Monday near Irvington Avenue and Oakwood Place in Elizabeth, NJ, during a vigil, leaving one person dead and up to four others injured. Elizabeth Police referred questions to the Union County Prosecutor's Office as investigators processed a crime scene that stretched for several blocks.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and three victims were taken to University Hospital in Newark. One had been shot in the chest, while two others suffered gunshot wounds to the arms and legs.
Irvington Avenue and Oakwood Place
Witnesses said a large gathering had assembled for the vigil when the gunfire began. One witness said, "A lot of shots were fired," and reported seeing numerous orange evidence markers on the ground.
Another witness estimated there were "upwards of 20" orange evidence markers at the scene. Dozens of shell casings were being processed as investigators worked the area for evidence and pieced together the sequence of events.
Morris Avenue to Hobson Street
Officials said a red sedan fled westbound on Morris Avenue after the shooting. About an hour later, a red sedan was found burning on Hobson Street in Newark, and investigators are trying to determine whether it is connected to the shooting.
The case now turns on that link: whether the car seen leaving the area and the burning car in Newark are the same vehicle, and whether that vehicle can help identify who opened fire at the vigil.
