Woking headteacher dies after Zoe Johson-Walker died suddenly following a medical incident at The Winston Churchill School on October 29. Surrey County Council said the headteacher of the Surrey secondary school had died, after emergency crews were called to the site just before 08.30.
The incident brought paramedics and an air ambulance to the school on Thursday morning. South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was called just before 08.30 on 29/10/26 after reports of a medical emergency at Winston Churchill School in Woking, and crews were joined by Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex.
Helyn Clack, speaking for Surrey County Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the unexpected death of Mrs Zoe Johson-Walker, Headteacher of The Winston Churchill School, Woking.” She added that Mrs Johnson-Walker “was a significant presence within the Surrey education community for many years” and “was a strong and dedicated leader who consistently championed her students and school.”
The council’s tribute also put the response of the school community at the centre of the moment. Clack said: “Zoe’s loss will be keenly felt by those who knew her, and our thoughts are with her family and friends, colleagues, students and the whole school community at this incredibly difficult time.” She asked that the privacy of Zoe’s family, friends and the wider school community be respected, including students and staff as they come to terms with the sudden loss.
What the public statement does not explain is the medical incident itself. The record gives the time, the school, the emergency response and the death, but not the cause behind the emergency that triggered it. For families, staff and students at The Winston Churchill School, the immediate reality is a leadership loss that has already drawn a formal council tribute and an urgent call for privacy.
