Jaylen Brown will miss Friday night's NBA Cup opener against the New York Knicks, leaving the Philadelphia 76ers without one of their key players for a game that arrives just one night before another quick turnaround.

Nick Nurse confirmed Brown's absence on Friday afternoon, saying: "I just know that he can't play tonight." The 76ers listed Brown as out with left patellar tendinopathy after he first reported left knee soreness following Wednesday's game at the Indiana Pacers.

Brown's absence comes at a difficult time

The timing matters because the 76ers are not only opening East Group B in the NBA Cup, but also facing a Knicks team that already knows how to handle this stage of the competition. Philadelphia tip off at 7:30 p.m. ET in Philadelphia on Friday, then head straight into a road game against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday evening.

Brown's injury is also notable because this is the same player who scored 19 points and had eight rebounds in the 76ers' season-opening win at the Knicks on Oct. 20. He had opened the campaign with a strong all-round performance, and his early rhythm has been one of the bigger positives for Philadelphia.

What Philadelphia lose without him

Brown arrived from the Boston Celtics this offseason, and the expectation was that he would give the 76ers another reliable scorer and rebounder alongside Joel Embiid. Through the early part of the season, he had averaged 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals across 11 regular-season games.

That is why his absence is more than a single-night setback. The 76ers now have to manage Friday without him, then recover quickly for Saturday evening in Charlotte before their next NBA Cup game at the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 6.

For a team entering East Group B, the margin for error is already small. Taking Brown out of the lineup against the Knicks makes the opener harder, but it also puts the spotlight on how well Philadelphia can absorb an injury and stay on schedule in a compact part of the calendar.
