HBO slipped out a 30-minute welcome to Derry Halloween special just in time for the holiday, and the move gives the series fresh material before season 2 even starts shooting. Titled A Story of Derry, the episode also pushes the mythology outward by introducing Maturin the Turtle.
The special follows three children who venture into the Western Wood and encounter an ancient, terrifying spirit. Maturin arrives as a huge benevolent cosmic deity in Stephen King’s shared multiverse, one of the Twelve Guardians of the Beams, and Pennywise’s ultimate nemesis. That is not decorative lore; it is the kind of franchise expansion that tells viewers HBO and the creative team are still mapping the larger structure of the series, not merely filling airtime.
A Story of Derry
30 minutes is a compact run time, but it carries more weight here than a standard bonus episode. The special arrives after season 1’s 1962 setting and before season 2, which is already in development, so the release works like a bridge: it keeps the audience inside the world while the next chapter is still being assembled.
Brad Caleb Kane said season 2 is deep in the writers’ room, with multiple scripts written and more than half the story broken. He also said the team is edging into pre-production and described the new season as very different from season 1, with a different palette and a Depression-era setting in 1935. His comparison was blunt: “a Warner Bros. gangster picture through the lens of Pennywise and Stephen King.”
Ethan King Joins Season 2
Ethan King has joined the writers’ room for season 2, adding another named contributor before production begins. That matters because the series is already building beyond the first season’s foundation, and the writing room is now shaping how the timeline will move backward from 1962 into 1935 while tying into Stephen King’s original novel and the Bradley Gang Massacre.
Andy Muschietti has said the new children in season 2 will be “runaways or orphans,” and that Pennywise the Clown will appear “a way you’ve never seen the character before.” Those details point to a season built around different social pressure points and a different visual language, not just a repeat of the first run.
Bill Skarsgård and 2027
Bill Skarsgård’s return has not been officially confirmed, even with season 2 already in development. That leaves the central face of the franchise unresolved while HBO and the creative team keep building around him, a notable gap for a series that depends on continuity as much as monster mythology.
Season 2 is expected to begin filming sometime in 2027, and HBO has no official release date for it yet. For now, the practical takeaway is simple: A Story of Derry is not just a holiday extra, it is the clearest sign that welcome to Derry is being expanded carefully, with the next season still in the writing phase and the biggest casting question still hanging over the project.
