Can I vote today? Harris County reached 1,000,447 early votes by 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Harris County Clerk’s Office. The total puts the county past 1 million early votes and gives election-night callers a larger batch of ballots to work with when results begin to come in.
Steven David on turnout pace
Steven David, a voter turnout data analyst, said participation has been running well ahead of the same point in the 2022 midterm and closer to the pace of the 2024 presidential election. He called the figure “Which is a really incredible amount of people to vote in an off year off cycle election.”
David said the pattern is visible at both ends of the voting period. “So what that shows me is that there was a surge of early voting at the beginning, and there’s a surge at the end,” he said. “But folks like me can go and pull down that data and then make reasonable assumptions.”
Harris County Clerk’s Office totals
The Harris County Clerk’s Office said the early vote total had reached 1,000,447 Friday afternoon. David said early in-person votes and processed mail ballot results are expected first Tuesday night, followed by Election Day totals.
He said the mix matters because “Early voting tends to skew for Democrats. Election Day voting tends to skew for Republicans.”
Next Tuesday returns
David said if early voting makes up about 75% of the vote, many races could be called quickly. “If you look at 2024, which this is looking like a presidential year, like that, 75% of the vote came from early voting. Only 25% came from Election Day,” he said. “So if that’s true, if that is the case for next Tuesday, we’ll be able to call a ton of races really quickly.”
For voters in Harris County and the people watching results on election night, the practical takeaway is simple: the county has already banked a large share of its vote before Election Day, and the first results Tuesday night are likely to come from early ballots rather than the full election-day count.
