Cardiff Rugby have made nine changes for Saturday’s BKT United Rugby Championship clash with the Ospreys at St Helens, as Corniel Van Zyl reshuffles his side for a Welsh derby that arrives after a bruising run of fixtures.
The biggest selection note is that Josh Adams has been released to get further game time, although the 31-year-old is still named in the side. Adams returned to action earlier this month, and his inclusion adds experience to a Cardiff team looking to respond quickly.
Team changes and availability
Cardiff are without six of their seven Wales squad members for the match, which helps explain the scale of the overhaul. The changes also give the Blue & Blacks a different look in key areas as they head into a fixture that will test their depth.
Van Zyl said the recent schedule has been demanding, but also stressed that the Ospreys represent a strong challenge and a chance for his side to raise their level. He noted that the Ospreys are full of confidence after back-to-back wins over the Dragons, either side of a win in the European Challenge Cup, and that their home setting at St Helens only adds to the difficulty.
Even so, Cardiff see the game as an opportunity rather than a burden. Van Zyl said Welsh derbies always bring extra edge and that the key for his team is to produce a strong performance and improve from their last outing.
That sets up a derby with plenty of context beyond the scoreboard. Cardiff’s changes suggest a side being managed carefully through a heavy stretch, while the Ospreys arrive with momentum and the backing of a confident home crowd. For Cardiff, the immediate task is simple: settle quickly, stay competitive, and make the most of a difficult but timely test.
