Sony pushed PS5 firmware update 26.07-14.22.00 on November 2, and the 1.267 GB download is tied to security work while GTA VI on PS5 moves closer. That matters because console owners who skip updates may find their software on the wrong side of Sony and the ongoing jailbreak race.

The new build is the latest move in that fight, and its patch notes point to security rather than features. Sony had released PS5 firmware 14.20 on October 21, but that earlier update did not mention security, so the difference between the two builds is not cosmetic.

14.10 jailbreak and 14.20

The pressure comes from a late-September jailbreak that reportedly covered PS5 consoles running firmware 7.00-13.60, including the PS5 Pro on systems not updated within the previous week. Some PS5 games later required firmware 14.00 to download updates, which made the newer firmware line more relevant for people watching both homebrew progress and game access.

Wesley, IGN Managing Editor, wrote that a prominent member of the homebrew community later showed evidence of a jailbreak for firmware 14.10. Follow-up comments said dumping game executables was not possible with that jailbreak, which keeps the exploit from being the kind that can readily feed piracy even if it can run code.

GTA 6 firmware target

The sticking point for players is the firmware floor for GTA 6. Some people believe the game will require at least 14.20 to run, and some believe it may require 14.22, so a PS5 left on older software could be boxed out if Sony and the game’s requirement line up that way.

Sony may release further security updates before November 19, and that leaves owners with a simple choice: stay current and avoid the security gap, or wait and risk missing the firmware version a future GTA 6 build might ask for. The unresolved issue is which PS5 version GTA 6 will actually require at launch.
