Mark Bellingham made a memorable England Veterans Over-50s debut on Saturday, scoring seven goals in a 13-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in Cambridgeshire.
The 50-year-old was back in action after coming out of retirement for the fixture, and he wasted little time making an impact. He scored six times before half time, then added one goal and one assist in the second half as England ran away with a one-sided result.
Bellingham had hung up his boots in 2019 after a 17-year career that included spells with 22 different clubs, but he has continued to compete in veterans' tournaments since then. His debut at this level added another unusual chapter to a football story that has already stretched across several eras of the English game.
The performance also came in a weekend that highlighted the wider Bellingham family. Jude Bellingham scored for Real Madrid in a 3-0 win over Racing Santander, while Jobe Bellingham featured for Borussia Dortmund in a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich.
That family connection has long been part of the backdrop, with both of Mark Bellingham's sons now representing England in senior international football contexts. Jude Bellingham has already earned 60 caps for England, underlining how firmly the family name is now established on the international stage.
After the match, Claudia Murillo offered special congratulations to Steve Edkins on his 100th international appearance and praised Bellingham's spectacular debut. Garry Nelson also described it as a great set of results for the over-50s and over-60s.
For England Veterans, the result was emphatic. For Bellingham, it was a debut that could hardly have gone much better.
