William Saliba has returned to first-team training for Arsenal ahead of the Champions League meeting with Slavia Prague, giving Mikel Arteta another major defensive option as the schedule tightens.

The 25-year-old defender has been out while managing a back issue that kept him sidelined for the start of the campaign. During last season, Saliba was dealing with the problem, and after France's World Cup semi-final loss to Spain he was sent to see a specialist. After the World Cup, it was decided that Saliba did not need surgery, but would require a lengthy rehabilitation.

Arsenal will be cautious

Arsenal have already made clear they will be cautious with Saliba's return, which makes sense given both his importance to the side and the length of the recovery. Saliba and Gabriel were described as the bedrock of Arsenal's team when the club won the Premier League title last season, so getting him back into full training is a significant step even if it does not guarantee an immediate return to action.

In Saliba's absence, Ezri Konsa has stepped in and partnered Gabriel Magalhaes. That has not stopped Arsenal from staying organised at the back. This season, the club have conceded only five goals in nine Premier League games, a strong record that shows the defensive structure has held up even without one of its best centre-backs.

What it means going forward

Saliba's return now gives Arteta a selection decision before the Champions League fixture with Slavia Prague. For a title-chasing side, the question is not only when Saliba is ready, but how quickly Arsenal want to reintroduce him after such a long rehabilitation. The answer could affect both the immediate European lineup and the longer Premier League rotation picture.

Even with Arsenal defending well, Saliba remains one of the players most likely to raise the team's ceiling. His comeback is therefore about more than simply adding depth. It gives Arsenal another elite defender at a time when the margins in both domestic and European competition are getting smaller.
