Phil Scott spent Monday campaigning across all 14 counties in Vermont, with the final stretch of the day taking him to White River Junction as he tried to close out his pre-election tour. The trip came one day before the election and while a new University of New Hampshire poll showed him trailing Amanda Janoo.

White River Junction stop

At the White River Junction honk-and-wave, Scott said the stop was seven on his schedule and part of a tradition that began when he ran for lieutenant governor. He said, “So, it’s a great way to spend the day, especially a beautiful day like today.”

Fred Burgess came out to meet him after hearing the governor would be there. “I thanked him for one thing, for all the work that he’s done,” Burgess said. He added, “I just came out. I heard that the governor was going to be here today at this time and I thought it might be a good day to come out and show some support.”

Scott’s closing message

Scott said he was proud of his five terms in office and said he was still working to lower costs. Asked about his final message for voters, he said, “I’m looking forward to, if reelected, to advancing on that, making Vermont more affordable, because we desperately need that.”

Jim Harrison also backed him at the stop, saying, “I can’t think of a nicer guy who really cares deeply about the future of Vermont.”

University of New Hampshire poll

The poll added a sharper edge to the day. Scott said, “A lot of the political pundits and some of the media have already written my obituary. But, you know, I’m feeling good about the campaign. I think that we’ve done a lot of good over the last 10 years.” The gap itself was not given, but the result made his statewide swing part campaign finish, part damage control.

Scott said he planned to cast his ballot on Tuesday and finish some last-minute campaigning before voters decided the race.
