Lucy Mcbath wins fifth term with Kevin Martin defeat

Lucy McBath defeated Kevin Martin in Tuesday's midterm election and will keep representing Georgia's 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House for another two years. The result gives her a fifth term after four previous terms in Congress.

Georgia's 6th Congressional District

CBS News projected that McBath would hold the seat in Washington for another two years. The district includes part of Atlanta and sections of Cobb, Douglas, Fayette and Fulton counties, and it heavily leaned Democratic in the 2024 election.

McBath first won election to Congress in 2018, when she ousted Karen Handel. After the 2020 Census, Republicans redrew the district and McBath moved into a primary race against Carolyn Bordeaux. After a court ordered another round of redistricting, she shifted to a district Republicans drew on the western side of Atlanta.

Her political profile rose after Jordan Davis, her 17-year-old son, was shot and killed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2012. McBath had been considering a run for governor, but she suspended that exploratory bid last year to focus on her husband's health after complications from a recent cancer surgery.

The race now adds another two years to McBath's time in the U.S. House, and the district remains in Democratic hands after the Tuesday result.
