Bangladesh will begin its Saff Championship campaign against Bhutan in the opening Group A match at the National Stadium in Dhaka on 5 November, with kickoff set for 8pm. The game starts Bangladesh’s home run in a six-team tournament and marks the country’s return to hosting the regional competition after an eight-year gap.
The matchup also carries added weight because Bangladesh is trying to win its second regional title. The team last lifted the Saff Championship trophy in 2003, and its most recent run to the final came in 2005, when it finished runners-up. Since then, the competition has moved through different venues and title holders, with India winning the previous edition in 2023 in Bengaluru by defeating Kuwait in the final.
What Bangladesh and Bhutan bring into the opener
Thomas Dooley has made it clear that Bangladesh should no longer view itself as an underdog. That message fits the setting in Dhaka, where the hosts will be expected to push the pace and take control early in Group A. Topu Barman said the players are determined to make the most of their home advantage, which will be one of Bangladesh’s biggest edges in the opening match.
Bhutan, meanwhile, arrives with a different preparation path. Its training programme was affected by the domestic league schedule, and that could be a factor against a host side playing in front of its own crowd. Bhutan also had matches against Seychelles and Mauritius in September, which offered recent competitive action before the tournament.
Group A picture in Dhaka
Bangladesh and Bhutan are both in Group A, and the opening match gives both teams an immediate chance to set the tone. India and Pakistan will also meet in the tournament’s opening fixture at the same venue on 5 November, making the National Stadium in Dhaka the center of attention from the start.
For Bangladesh, the task is straightforward: start well, use the home setting, and build momentum in a tournament that has not been hosted there for eight years. For Bhutan, the opportunity is just as clear. A strong result in the opener would immediately change the conversation in a group that begins under the lights in Dhaka.
