Kyle Hilliard says the Ocarina Of Time Switch 2 controls are easier to live with once the Switch 2 Pro Controller's back buttons are remapped. The new setup matters because the game now asks players to sprint and steer a free camera at the same time.
Kyle Hilliard on Hyrule Field
Hilliard called the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time “pretty excellent,” and that judgment came with a practical caveat: holding the sprint button can make the free camera harder to manage comfortably. He described quickly running into a strange claw-style grip when trying to keep both inputs under control.
The game hit Switch 2 today, and Nintendo has added jump, sprint, and a right-stick free camera to the classic formula. Those changes modernize play without changing the basic shape of the game, but they also create a hands-on problem for anyone who wants to move fast while looking around at the same time.
Switch 2 Pro Controller GL and GR
The Switch 2 Pro Controller solves that with back buttons that can be remapped on a per-game basis through the Switch 2 system menu after holding the Home button. The menu lets players assign GL and GR, which gives them a way to move common actions off the face buttons and onto the back of the controller.
Hilliard mapped A, which controls Roll and Dash, to GL and X, which controls Jump, to GR. That setup lets him Dash without lifting a thumb from the right stick, while A still handles actions like opening a treasure chest or a door when needed.
GL and X in Ocarina of Time
The useful part here is not just that the controller can be remapped. It is that the new control scheme creates a specific clash, and the back buttons let players break that clash without redesigning how they hold the controller.
For players of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the Switch 2 remake, the immediate next step is simple: try the GL and GR remapping if sprinting keeps fighting camera control. The story does not add any further update beyond that workaround, so the remaining question is how much better the setup feels for players who want to avoid a claw grip entirely.
