MSC poesia detainment Miami Coast Guard stopped an 11-day trip before it could leave Miami, and the ship never got underway from the Port of Miami. Fran Trascritti and Teresa Trascritti were among the passengers who had flown in for the cruise and then learned it would not sail.
Teresa Trascritti said, “This was our anniversary cruise.” Fran Trascritti said the couple had arrived in Miami last Saturday and boarded the MSC Poesia the following day, expecting to spend 11 days at sea. Instead, the captain later told passengers, “It is with very deep regret that I must inform you that we have made the difficult decision to cancel our cruise.”
MSC Poesia and Miami
MSC Cruises told CBS News the cancellation was tied to a regulatory matter that came up before the ship was set to depart. The company said it was unable to get the issue resolved in time to set sail from the Port of Miami. The United States Coast Guard detained the MSC Poesia in Miami before departure, and an inspection remained ongoing and needed more time to finish.
Fran Trascritti said that when the delay was first announced, the couple thought they were looking at a short hold. “Maybe later on in the day, they said they're going to be delayed in leaving Miami, we thought, well, okay, no big deal,” he said. What followed was a cancellation that ended the trip before it began.

The Trascrittis are from Ross and have been married for 42 years. They said they were fully refunded for the trip and given a future cruise credit for the same amount, and their travel back home was also covered. That left the pair with no sailing, but with their return arranged after the cruise was called off.
Fran Trascritti said, “What we can see and what we could smell is waste, sewage, and they are pumping out things in tanker trucks, but we don't know for sure if that's it or not.” He also said, “We expected to be Jamaica and Colombia and the Panama Canal to see it, and then we end up seeing the Port of Miami cargo ships.” Teresa Trascritti said, “It is definitely something I don't think we would ever encounter again, so I don't know, it's been, it's been different,” while Fran Trascritti added, “We've taken a lot of cruises over the years, this will be the most memorable.”
They planned to travel home on Thursday. The unresolved regulatory issue is what kept the MSC Poesia from departing and turned an 11-day cruise into an airport-to-hotel turnaround in Miami.
