UAB Dismisses Football Coach Trent Dilfer Following Third Consecutive Loss

UAB has officially dismissed head football coach Trent Dilfer following the team’s third consecutive loss. The decision was announced on October 12, 2025, after UAB fell to Florida Atlantic 53-33, bringing their season record to 2-4.

Trent Dilfer’s Record at UAB

Trent Dilfer, a former NFL quarterback with a Super Bowl championship, served as UAB’s head coach for just over two seasons. His record during this period was 9 wins and 21 losses.

Statement from Athletic Director

Mark Ingram, the athletic director at UAB, released a statement reflecting on the decision. He noted, “Unfortunately, our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program.” Ingram acknowledged Dilfer’s dedication and wished him well for the future.

Transition of Coaching Roles

Following Dilfer’s departure, Alex Mortensen will take over as interim coach. Mortensen is the son of the late NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

Background on Dilfer’s Coaching Career

Trent Dilfer was hired by UAB in November 2022 after the previous coach, Bill Clark, retired due to health issues. Before joining UAB, Dilfer had enjoyed a successful coaching stint at Lipscomb Academy, a private high school in Nashville, where he coached for four years.

Team Performance Under Dilfer

  • 2023 Season: 4-8 record
  • 2024 Season: 3-9 record
  • 2025 Season (so far): 2-4 record

This season, UAB’s victories came from narrow wins against Alabama State and Akron. Unfortunately, the team is struggling defensively, ranking last in scoring defense within the American Athletic Conference, allowing an average of 41.3 points per game. Additionally, UAB and Tulane have the highest number of penalties in the league, averaging 8.5 per game.

Dilfer’s NFL Background

Dilfer was drafted sixth overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1994. Over 14 years in the NFL, he played 130 games, accumulating 20,518 passing yards, with 113 touchdown throws and 129 interceptions. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1997.
