Head of the Charles: Course Map, Viewing Spots, Tips, and Parking Guide

The Head of the Charles Regatta is a key event in the rowing calendar, attracting numerous spectators and participants each year. Set along a 3-mile course, the race features six bridges that serve as excellent viewing points, though they tend to get crowded as the event progresses.

Course Map and Viewing Spots

Different locations offer unique perspectives of the rowing competition. Here’s a breakdown of the best spots to watch the Head of the Charles:

  • Start Line: Located near Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse, it is accessible to spectators.
  • BU Bridge: This area provides a view of the start and additional parts of the course.
  • Magazine Beach: A quieter option where spectators can see singles and doubles launch.
  • River Street Bridge & Western Avenue Bridge: Ideal for observing the Powerhouse Stretch, a straight section of the river.
  • Weeks Footbridge: This iconic bridge marks a challenging 90-degree turn for crews and attracts many spectators, resulting in heavy crowds.
  • Anderson Bridge & Eliot Bridge: Great positions to see races conclude, with Herter Park nearby for additional viewing space.

Activities Beyond Racing

For those who may not be avid rowing fans, there are other activities to enjoy during the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and explore the course. However, expect larger crowds further along the river.

Hospitality areas are located throughout the venue, with the Weld Exhibition being a popular destination for food and beverages. Additionally, Riverbend Park offers a good viewing area between the Weeks Footbridge and Anderson Bridge.

The Riverbender area, previously known as Reunion Village, promotes a family-friendly atmosphere with a daily admission of $25. Alcohol is available for those aged 21 and over. For a premium experience, tickets are available for the Eliot Bridge Enclosure at $275 per adult per day, which includes high-quality food and drink as well as a strategic view of the final stretch.

Special Events

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the regatta, a themed “birthday party” will be held at the Eliot Bridge Enclosure on Saturday evening, with tickets priced at $75. The Expo at Attager Row will feature over 40 vendors selling exclusive merchandise and refreshments.

Parking and Transportation Tips

Attendees are advised to rely on public transportation instead of driving to the regatta due to anticipated road closures and limited parking. The closest MBTA stations are Central and Harvard on the Red Line, and BU Central on the B branch of the Green Line. Several bus routes also service the area.

If you must drive, consider reserving a spot in advance using apps like SpotHero or ParkBoston. Approximately 500 parking spots will be available at Harvard Stadium for $30 per day, but they fill quickly. Memorial Drive will be closed from Cambridge Boat Club to Western Avenue from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on race days.

Weather Conditions

The weather for the regatta weekend looks favorable, with high pressure expected to bring dry conditions and sunshine to Boston. Temperatures will be typical for this time of year, although windy conditions may impact competitors and could make spectators feel a chill.
