Morocco to Increase Health and Education Funding to $15 Billion by 2026

Morocco is set to allocate 140 billion dirhams (approximately $15 billion) for health and education in its 2026 budget. This increase of 16% from the previous year aims to enhance the quality of services in these vital sectors. The royal palace announced this initiative following recent protests from the youth, who demanded better educational and healthcare facilities.

Significance of Increased Funding

The proposed budget for health and education represents about 10% of Morocco’s GDP. This significant investment is intended to address ongoing concerns regarding service quality in these domains.

Economic Growth Expectations

According to the royal palace, Morocco’s economy is expected to grow by 4.8% this year. This growth represents an increase from 3.8% projected for 2024, fueled by strong domestic demand and positive developments in the non-farming sector.

Regional Inequality and Political Reforms

The 2026 budget also includes funding aimed at reducing regional inequalities. A ministerial council chaired by King Mohammed VI discussed this draft budget, which will be further examined by the finance minister in parliament next week.

Electoral Reforms Ahead of General Elections

In addition to budget discussions, two draft laws were adopted to enhance women’s and youth participation in the upcoming elections. Key proposals include:

  • Barring candidates convicted of crimes from running.
  • Simplified candidacy rules for candidates under 35 years old.
  • Financial support covering 75% of campaign costs for young candidates.

These reforms aim to foster a more inclusive political landscape in Morocco as it prepares for its next general elections.
