Callander Reveals Veteran-Themed Crosswalks for Remembrance Day

As Remembrance Day approaches on November 11th, communities across Canada are finding unique ways to honor veterans. One such initiative is taking place in Callander, where officials have unveiled veteran-themed crosswalks. These crosswalks serve not only as a tribute to those who have served but also as a visually striking reminder of their sacrifices.
New Veteran-Themed Crosswalks in Callander
Callander has introduced two newly painted crosswalks dedicated to veterans. One is located by the waterfront, connecting Veteran’s Ridge Memorial to Centennial Park. The second is situated on Lansdowne Street, which has been officially designated as Veterans Way.
Background of the Initiative
This initiative has been years in development. The idea originated during a 2020 budget discussion when community members advocated for more recognition of veterans. As a result, the Callander Council designated Lansdowne Street as Veterans Way, enhancing its visual identity with the new crosswalks.
- Location of the waterfront crosswalk: Connects Veteran’s Ridge to Centennial Park.
- Location of the second crosswalk: Lansdowne Street, designated Veterans Way.
- Initiation year: 2020, following a community-driven discussion.
Community Involvement
Callander Legion Branch 445 was actively involved in the decision-making process. Mayor Robb Noon emphasized the Council’s close collaboration with the Legion to ensure community support for the project.
Cameron Clarke, First-Vice of Callander Legion Branch 445, expressed enthusiasm for the crosswalks, stating that the Legion was “ecstatic” about the recognition for veterans, particularly before Remembrance Day.
Support and Contributions
Significant support for the project came from local businessman David McDonald, owner of Blacktop. McDonald, whose family has a rich military background, generously donated the crosswalk work, including annual maintenance for the next five to six years.
- David McDonald’s military background: Son of a CF-101 pilot and officer; grandfathers served in WWII.
- Contribution: No-cost installation and maintenance for several years.
Community Feedback and Future Plans
The response from residents has been overwhelmingly positive. Mayor Noon reported that feedback includes praise for the crosswalks and their significance to the community. Additionally, the City of North Bay is planning to install similar commemorative crosswalks for veterans, reinforcing the spirit of remembrance across different communities.
As El-Balad continues to highlight such initiatives, it emphasizes the importance of honoring those who have served our country, not just on Remembrance Day but throughout the year.
