Chen has chosen to perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto in E Minor, Op. 11, during his final on October 20 at 6 p.m. local time (noon ET).

This year’s selection involved a rigorous process, where 171 pianists participated in preliminary rounds earlier this year. They performed in three stages:

  • Stage 1: 84 pianists
  • Stage 2: 40 pianists
  • Stage 3: 20 pianists

Previous Achievements

Chen has garnered attention in other international competitions as well. He achieved first prize at the 2023 Artur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, earning $51,000, and also secured first place at the Geneva International Music Competition in 2022, winning $27,000. His fellow Canadian, Eric Guo, 23, reached Stage 3 but did not advance to the finals.

Canada has seen notable success in past editions of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. Bruce Liu won the gold medal in 2021, while Charles Richard-Hamelin secured silver in 2015. Additionally, the Vietnamese Canadian pianist Dang Thai Son won gold in 1980.
