Michael J Fox Reveals ‘Back to the Future’ Set Tension with Co-Star

Michael J. Fox has recently shed light on some behind-the-scenes tensions during the filming of the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future. He specifically pointed out how his co-star Crispin Glover’s unique and unpredictable acting methods created friction on set.

Set Tensions with Co-Star Crispin Glover

Fox portrayed Marty McFly, while Glover played George McFly, Marty’s father. According to Fox, despite their prior acquaintance, he found Glover’s acting style challenging. He described Glover as someone who “never did the same thing the same way twice,” which led to innovative, yet sometimes problematic moments during filming.

In his memoir, Future Boy, Fox remarked that “nobody puts Crispin in a box,” yet the crew essentially had to create a physical constraint to manage Glover’s movements. He recalled a particular instance where Glover frequently strayed from his designated mark, interpreting George as a “wanderer” who moved freely around the set.

Innovative Solutions on Set

To accommodate Glover’s spontaneous approach, the crew fashioned a “miniature corral” using sandbags and camera stands. This was to ensure he remained within the shot parameters. Despite these challenges, Fox held Glover’s talent in high regard, stating that although their methods differed, he respected Glover’s dedication to his character.

  • Crispin Glover was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman in the sequels released in 1989 and 1990.
  • Fox initially had conflicts with Lea Thompson, the film’s female lead, because he took over the role from her friend, Eric Stoltz.
  • Thompson later developed a strong working relationship with Fox.

Michael J. Fox’s Journey with Parkinson’s

In recent interviews, Fox also discussed his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he has lived with since the age of 29. He expressed a candid wish for a peaceful passing, wishing to avoid a dramatic scenario. Fox shared his approach to daily life, stating, “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it.”

He highlighted that each day presents new physical challenges, but he remains committed to navigating them. His reflections emphasize both resilience and the ongoing adjustments he faces in daily living.

Fox’s experiences not only underscore the complexities of filmmaking but also showcase his courage in confronting personal health challenges.
