Michael J. Fox has recently shed light on some behind-the-scenes tensions during the filming of the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future. He specifically pointed out how his co-star Crispin Glover’s unique and unpredictable acting methods created friction on set.

Fox portrayed Marty McFly, while Glover played George McFly, Marty’s father. According to Fox, despite their prior acquaintance, he found Glover’s acting style challenging. He described Glover as someone who “never did the same thing the same way twice,” which led to innovative, yet sometimes problematic moments during filming.

In his memoir, Future Boy, Fox remarked that “nobody puts Crispin in a box,” yet the crew essentially had to create a physical constraint to manage Glover’s movements. He recalled a particular instance where Glover frequently strayed from his designated mark, interpreting George as a “wanderer” who moved freely around the set.

Innovative Solutions on Set

To accommodate Glover’s spontaneous approach, the crew fashioned a “miniature corral” using sandbags and camera stands. This was to ensure he remained within the shot parameters. Despite these challenges, Fox held Glover’s talent in high regard, stating that although their methods differed, he respected Glover’s dedication to his character.
