HBO Max Subscription Costs Rise Starting Today

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced a price increase for all HBO Max subscription plans, effective immediately for new subscribers. Existing users will see the new rates reflected starting November 20, depending on their billing cycle.
New HBO Max Subscription Costs
The pricing changes are as follows:
- Ad-supported plan: Now $11 per month, an increase of $1, or $110 annually, up by $10.
- Standard plan: New monthly cost is $18.49, rising by $1.50, or $185 per year, an increase of $15.
- Premium plan: Subscribers are now required to pay $23 per month, a $2 increase, or $230 annually, up by $20.
This is the first increase since the previous adjustments made 16 months ago. Subscribers who are on yearly plans will receive a notification regarding the changes 30 days prior to their renewal dates.
Context Behind the Price Increase
David Zaslav, CEO of WBD, hinted at upcoming price hikes during a September earnings call. He emphasized the quality of the programming as justification for the changes. “We think we’re way underpriced,” Zaslav mentioned, referencing efforts to combat password sharing and elevate streaming quality.
Industry Trends
The announcement coincided with Disney’s decision to raise prices on several Disney+ plans, including bundles that feature HBO Max. This timing indicates a broader trend of increasing subscription fees across streaming services.
Strategic Review and Company Developments
Recent news also reveals that WBD is exploring strategic options amid financial considerations. The company has received interest from multiple parties regarding a potential acquisition. Earlier this month, they declined a low offer from Paramount Skydance.
- WBD is considering various strategies to enhance shareholder value.
- Plans to split into two separate entities are still in motion, with the separation aimed for mid-2026.
Warner Bros. will retain its key entertainment divisions, while Discovery Global will manage several live cable channels. The ongoing review has no set timetable, highlighting a period of uncertainty for the company.
