Torrential Rain Floods Major Brighton Intersection

Heavy rainfall caused significant flooding at a major intersection in Brighton on Monday, October 20. The flooding occurred at Preston Circus, disrupting traffic and affecting local businesses and residents.
Urgent Action Required for Flooding in Brighton
Brighton and Hove City Council has reached out to Southern Water, urging immediate attention to address the drainage issues that contribute to these recurrent floods. Labour councillor Trevor Muten, who oversees transport and city infrastructure, expressed deep concern over the impact of the flooding.
Flooding Details and Impact
Muten remarked, “It was devastating to see the flooding in Preston Circus following yesterday’s heavy rainfall.” He acknowledged that the flooding not only affects transportation but also has emotional and financial repercussions for the community.
- Date of Incident: Monday, October 20
- Location: Preston Circus, Brighton
- Additional Affected Area: The Old Village, Portslade
Infrastructure Measures and Concerns
In July, the council had conducted major gully clearing in the area, with a follow-up inspection three weeks prior to the recent storm. Despite these efforts, the council believes the drainage system did not function properly during the heavy rain.
Muten stated, “We’re confident the gullies were operating as they should but will continue to review our drainage cleaning policy.” He emphasized the need for resources to be directed toward the most critical locations.
Collaboration Needed for Better Drainage
Unfortunately, issues persist because the area’s drainage connects to Southern Water’s sewer system, which may have been operating at full capacity. Muten plans to meet with representatives from Southern Water this week to discuss a strategic plan aimed at resolving these ongoing problems.
“It’s crucial Brighton and Hove has an infrastructure fit for purpose,” Muten added. As severe weather incidents become more common due to climate change, addressing these vulnerabilities has become increasingly urgent.
