Blue Jays Insights: Game 1 Starter, Bichette’s Role, and Gausman’s Strategy
In preparation for the World Series, Bo Bichette has adopted a versatile role to assist his team. Reports indicate that he has been practicing at second base, reflecting his effort to recover from a PCL sprain sustained in early September. Bichette expressed his willingness to fill any role that helps the Blue Jays succeed, stating, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help this team win.” This sentiment comes as he aims to return from injury, although he was not included in the ALCS roster.
Bichette’s Position Flexibility
Manager John Schneider commented on Bichette’s potential contributions, noting he could play second base, shortstop, or designated hitter if cleared to return. Historically, all of Bichette’s 716 MLB appearances have been at shortstop, with 31 at DH. His professional experience at second base is limited, with only one MLB appearance for Triple-A Buffalo in 2019 and 29 starts in the minors from 2016 to 2018.
Should Bichette return to the infield, Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s playing time may be affected. Kiner-Falefa manned second base during the ALCS, completing four games with a solid 5-for-15 performance against Seattle. However, Bichette’s potent bat would likely enhance the lineup more than Kiner-Falefa’s defensive skills. Meanwhile, Andres Gimenez would transition back to second base if necessary, depending on Bichette’s condition.
Game 1 Starter: Trey Yesavage
On the mound for Game 1 will be right-hander Trey Yesavage. He caught attention during the postseason due to his rapid climb through the Blue Jays system. Drafted in the first round of 2024, he made his professional debut in April and quickly moved through the ranks, impressing at each level, including Triple-A Buffalo, where he notched 26 strikeouts in just 17 1/3 innings.
In his major league debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, Yesavage struck out nine over five innings. His performances culminated in a stellar playoff debut, where he pitched 5 1/3 hitless innings against the Yankees. Although he suffered a loss in Game 2 of the ALCS, he rebounded effectively in Game 6, securing a crucial win for his team.
Gausman’s Strategy for Game 2
Initially, Kevin Gausman was expected to start Game 1 of the World Series. However, after pitching in relief during Game 7 of the ALCS, where he secured a victory thanks to George Springer’s key home run, Gausman’s availability for Friday’s game diminished. He expressed the difficulty of missing the start, acknowledging his challenge in ensuring his readiness for the upcoming games.
Gausman’s performance has been impressive during the postseason, maintaining a 2.00 ERA across four appearances. If he pitches in Game 2, he could potentially be set for another start in Game 6, should the series require it. His contributions have been pivotal, and the Blue Jays will rely on both him and Yesavage as they pursue their championship aspirations.
