Bankrupt Ex-Darts Champion Qualifies for World Championship via Lesser-Known Rule

Mervyn King, a former world No. 1 dart player, has successfully qualified for the PDC World Darts Championship. His qualification comes through a lesser-known rule that usually favors the top three players in the Challenge Tour. However, King’s situation is unique.

Background of Mervyn King

Hailing from Ipswich, King, 59, previously reached the World Championship final in 2004. On that occasion, he was defeated by Andy Fordham. King’s journey has not been without challenges, as he declared bankruptcy in March 2022, owing over £500,000 to HMRC due to unpaid taxes on his winnings.

Qualification through a Unique Rule

This year, King secured his qualifying spot by finishing fourth in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit. Normally, this tour grants qualification to the top three players. However, Darius Labanauskas, the runner-up, had already qualified through the PDC Pro Tour. Consequently, King benefitted from the vacancy and earned his place at the championship.

Performance in Previous Championships

  • King’s last appearance in the World Championship was in 2023.
  • He reached the third round but was eliminated by Rob Cross.
  • In 2022, he advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Ryan Joyce, Steve Lennon, and Raymond Smith.
  • His quarter-finals run ended in a comprehensive 5-0 loss to James Wade.

Financial Implications and Current Ranking

With his qualification, King is set to receive £15,000. If he wins in the first round, he could add another £10,000 to his earnings. However, his recent performance on the Challenge Tour has only netted him under £8,000 in 2025, leaving him currently ranked 122nd in the PDC world rankings.

Return to the Stage

King’s return to the Alexandra Palace marks a significant moment in his career after a three-year hiatus. Darts fans eagerly anticipate his performance at this prestigious event, where the excitement continues to build.
