CNN Unveils All Access Streaming Subscription, Marking New Era

CNN has launched its All Access subscription streaming service, marking a significant shift in its digital strategy. This new offering comes over three years after the discontinuation of CNN+, a previous attempt at a streaming service. The All Access service is part of a broader plan by Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, to enhance its streaming capabilities amidst changing viewer preferences.

CNN All Access Subscription Details

The All Access subscription costs $6.99 per month. However, new subscribers who sign up by January 5 can take advantage of a special introductory rate of $41.99 for the first year. Initially, the service will be available in the United States, with plans for global expansion in the future.

Service Features

  • Live streaming of 16 hours of CNN’s programming each day.
  • On-demand content, including original series focused on travel and food.
  • Access through connected-TV apps like Amazon and Roku.
  • Free access for pay-TV subscribers who authenticate their accounts through participating providers.

The All Access service operates daily from 5 a.m. to midnight ET, with programming schedules closely mirroring the CNN linear feed. Subscribers will also gain access to additional content from CNN’s existing digital paywall service, which is available for $4 a month.

Leadership and Vision

Mark Thompson, the new chairman and CEO of CNN, is leading this initiative. Thompson previously served as CEO of the New York Times, where he developed strategies that successfully adapted to the digital landscape. He took over leadership of CNN in 2023, following the closure of CNN+, a projection that had a different corporate focus.

The Competitive Streaming Landscape

CNN’s decision to introduce All Access contrasts with other companies such as CBS and NBCUniversal, which favor free, ad-supported models. Notably, NBC News is preparing its own subscription service later this year. Meanwhile, Fox News offers a distinct service in Fox Nation that diverges from its linear programming, focusing instead on entertainment content.

Other competitors, like ESPN, are also blending traditional and on-demand content in their streaming services. Despite these varied approaches, CNN’s strategy aims to cater to audiences who may have turned away from traditional pay-TV due to rising costs.

A Unique Offering in News Streaming

The All Access service is designed to deliver comprehensive news coverage through a unique model. Alex MacCallum, the Executive Vice President of Digital Products and Services at CNN Worldwide, described it as an exceptional product in the news sector. He emphasized the goal of providing quality journalism that allows viewers to engage with content flexibly, whether through live broadcasts or shorter, digestible updates.

In addition to live channels, All Access features over 1,000 hours of CNN Films, original series, and a dedicated section for podcasts. The platform aims to comprehensively reflect CNN’s reputation for trusted journalism, reinforcing its position in the competitive streaming market.
