Claude’s Consumer Growth Accelerates Despite Pentagon Deal Setback

Claude’s user engagement has significantly increased despite challenges with a Pentagon contract. The AI model, developed by Anthropic, is gaining traction among consumers, especially after CEO Dario Amodei rejected government requests to use its technology for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.

Consumer Growth for Claude Surges

Recent data indicates that Claude’s mobile app is attracting more users, surpassing its primary competitor, ChatGPT, in download numbers. As of March 2, Claude achieved 149,000 daily downloads compared to ChatGPT’s 124,000.

Active Users on the Rise

According to Similarweb, Claude’s daily active users reached 11.3 million on March 2, marking an impressive growth of 183% since the beginning of 2023, when usage was around 4 million. This figure had risen from 5 million in February.

  • March 2 Daily Active Users: 11.3 million
  • Users at the Start of 2023: 4 million
  • Users in Early February: 5 million
  • Daily Downloads on March 2: 149,000
  • ChatGPT Daily Active Users on March 2: 250.5 million

Despite these successes, ChatGPT continues to lead the market significantly. However, Claude’s rapid increase in daily active users positions it well within the competitive landscape, particularly as growth coincides with Anthropic’s negotiation news with the Pentagon.

Web Traffic and Global Reach

Claude has not only seen a rise in app engagement but also increased web traffic. The app experienced a 43% boost month-over-month in February and a remarkable 297.7% year-over-year increase. While it still trails other AI applications in total web traffic, Antoine reported that ChatGPT’s web traffic decreased by 6.5% within the same timeframe.

App Store Success

Anthropic announced that Claude achieved over 1 million sign-ups daily and currently ranks as the top app in the U.S. App Store. The app retains its number one position in 15 countries, including:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Singapore
  • Switzerland
  • The U.K.

In light of these developments, Claude is showing promising growth dynamics that could redefine consumer engagement within the AI sector, especially if these trends continue.
