Character.AI Terminates Kid-Friendly Chatbot Experience

Character.AI, an emerging AI role-playing startup, is implementing significant changes to its platform in response to serious concerns over the safety of its young users. This decision follows tragic incidents, including the suicides of two teenagers after engaging with AI chatbots. In light of these occurrences, the company is prioritizing the protection of minors and has announced that it will ban open-ended chats for users under 18.

Changes to the Chatbot Experience

Karandeep Anand, the CEO of Character.AI, emphasized the importance of this decision during an interview with TechCrunch. “We have decided to remove the ability for users under 18 to engage in any open-ended chats,” Anand stated. This policy change aims to address the risks associated with unrestricted conversations between teenagers and AI.

Transition from Chatting to Creating

Character.AI plans to shift its focus from being an “AI companion” to a “role-playing platform.” Instead of having open conversations, users will be encouraged to use prompts for collaborative storytelling and visual content creation. This pivot aims to redirect user engagement from dialogue to creative processes.

Implementation Timeline and Age Verification

The company will gradually restrict access to AI chatbots for teenagers by November 25. Initially, a daily chat limit will be applied to underage users, which will decrease incrementally until it reaches zero. To enforce this new policy, Character.AI will implement an in-house age verification tool, alongside third-party solutions like Persona. In cases where those methods are insufficient, the company will resort to facial recognition and ID checks to ensure compliance.

Previous Changes and Future Expectations

Previously, Character.AI had implemented several protective measures, including:

  • Parental insights tools
  • Filtered character options
  • Restrictions on romantic conversations
  • Notifications on time spent with chatbots

While these changes led to a decline in the platform’s under-18 user base, Anand acknowledges that the upcoming modifications may not be popular either. “It’s safe to assume that a lot of our teen users will be disappointed,” he noted.

Enhancing Creative Features

As part of its strategy to create a content-driven social platform, Character.AI has introduced various new features. Recent additions include:

  • AvatarFX: A video generation tool that converts images into animated videos.
  • Scenes: Interactive storylines where users can engage with favorite characters.
  • Community Feed: A platform for users to share their characters and creative outputs.

Commitment to User Safety

Character.AI has publicly acknowledged the necessity for these changes, stating, “We do not take this step of removing open-ended Character chat lightly, but we believe it is the right thing to do.” Anand commented on the potential migration of teenagers to other AI platforms that allow open-ended chats, underscoring the industry’s responsibility to safeguard younger audiences.

Regulatory Pressure and Future Directions

These changes come in the wake of increasing regulatory scrutiny. Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have proposed legislation to ban AI chatbot companions for minors, while California has already enacted regulations requiring companies to meet specific safety standards for AI chatbots.

Alongside these platform changes, Character.AI is also establishing an AI Safety Lab aimed at enhancing safety protocols in AI-powered entertainment features. “Safety will be critical as we advance in this field,” Anand asserted.
