The Shards is a dark coming-of-age story with semi-autobiographical elements from Ellis. Set in Los Angeles in 1981, it chronicles the final year of a 17-year-old Ellis at the elite Buckley prep school. The narrative intensifies with the introduction of Robert Mallory, a new student whose peculiar presence coincides with the escalating activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler.
