Farrell Dismisses Claims of Being ‘Underdone’
Paddy McCarthy is poised for his potential debut with the Ireland national rugby team, following his selection on the bench. The Leinster prop is the younger brother of lock Joe McCarthy, and has previously been an unused member of Ireland’s squad during their summer tour in Georgia and Portugal under interim coach Paul O’Connell.
Farrell Comments on McCarthy’s Progress
Head coach Andy Farrell expressed his belief in McCarthy’s capabilities, noting that the 22-year-old has shown promise since his standout performance with the under-20s. During a training session in 2023, McCarthy caught the attention of the coaching staff as he trained against the senior team.
- “That’s why we train against the Under-20s, so we know who is coming through,” said Farrell.
- Farrell emphasized the importance of such training sessions for young players.
- “He spoiled our session on many occasions, but there’s something in the eyes there that not a lot of people have got,” Farrell added.
Leadership on the Field
Caelan Doris, who has recently recovered from shoulder surgery, will start on the bench. The coaching staff has entrusted Dan Sheehan with the captaincy for the second time. Sheehan previously led the team against Wales in this year’s Six Nations and took charge for the British and Irish Lions match in June against the Western Force.
Sheehan’s Development as a Leader
Farrell has praised Sheehan’s evolution in leadership, highlighting his calm demeanor and controlled approach during games. “He uses his body language to convey control, instilling confidence in the squad,” Farrell mentioned.
- “It gives confidence throughout the squad,” he noted.
- Farrell believes Sheehan performs without interference from his leadership duties.
Farrell also remarked that the honor of captaincy will likely further enhance Sheehan’s growth as a leader in the future. As Ireland prepares for upcoming matches, both McCarthy and Sheehan play vital roles in the team’s development and performance.
