Firefighters Warn of Fireworks Safety as Guy Fawkes Approaches

As Guy Fawkes approaches, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has issued urgent warnings regarding fireworks safety. With fireworks sales commencing today, authorities stress the importance of caution to prevent dangerous incidents.

Fireworks Incidents on the Rise

Last year saw a concerning surge in fireworks-related incidents, totaling 166 callouts, the highest since 2019. Notably, nine of these incidents involved structure fires. Adrian Nacey, the national manager for community readiness and recovery at FENZ, emphasized the need for stricter public regulations on fireworks sales.

Proposed Restrictions

Nacey remarked that while they do not advocate for an outright ban, further limitations on retail sales should be considered. Currently, fireworks can be purchased for a limited period of four days, specifically from November 2. Only individuals aged 18 and over are permitted to make purchases.

Guidelines for Safe Usage

FENZ strongly encourages safe usage practices. Fireworks should only be set off on private property or places where landowner permission is granted. Prohibited areas include beaches, council parks, and any public spaces.

Understand Weather Conditions

  • The recent weather conditions have made fire spread particularly dangerous.
  • Wind can exacerbate fire risks, transforming a festive event into a hazardous situation.

Nacey suggests checking local fire danger levels at checkitsalright.nz prior to using fireworks. If it is windy, individuals are advised to wait for calmer conditions to launch their fireworks safely in open areas.

Community Concerns and Recommendations

Community complaints have already started to surface regarding fireworks being used ahead of the legal sales period. Nacey highlighted an ongoing issue with individuals stockpiling fireworks, leading to increased risks during the summer months, characterized by hot and dry weather.

Safety Precautions

To promote responsible usage, FENZ recommends the following safety measures:

  • Point fireworks straight up, avoiding direction towards people, pets, or structures.
  • Notify neighbors in advance of planned fireworks displays.
  • Keep a hose or a bucket of water readily available.
  • Saturate used fireworks in water before disposal.

Nacey concludes by urging the public to consider attending public displays instead of using personal fireworks, leaving the handling to professionals equipped for safe execution.
