South Carolina Dismisses Offensive Coordinator Mike Shula

South Carolina has officially dismissed offensive coordinator Mike Shula just nine games into the 2025 season. This decision was made public on Sunday afternoon following the Gamecocks’ disappointing 30-14 loss to No. 7 Ole Miss, where the team recorded only 230 total yards, one of their worst performances of the year.

Change at the Helm of South Carolina’s Offense

Head coach Shane Beamer announced the termination of Shula, who was also responsible for quarterbacks, effective immediately. This marks a significant shift as Shula becomes the third assistant coach to be relieved of their duties since Beamer’s tenure began in 2021.

Reasons Behind the Dismissal

The Gamecocks have struggled under Shula’s leadership, posting a 3-6 record overall and 1-6 in SEC play. Under his direction, the team averaged the lowest points and rushing yards in the SEC. Additionally, fans expressed their discontent with frequent “Fire Shula” chants during a recent home game against Oklahoma.

Contractual and Financial Implications

Shula’s annual salary was $1.1 million, and his dismissal carries a financial burden of approximately $2.4 million, due to his remaining contract through December 2027. This sum will be paid out in monthly installments, although some funds may be mitigated by any future employment he secures.

Looking Ahead

As the Gamecocks move forward in the season, they will seek a new offensive coordinator. This will be the fourth offensive coordinator under Beamer. It remains unclear who will take on play-calling responsibilities for the remaining three regular-season games.

Beamer acknowledged the need for significant changes following the loss to Ole Miss, stating, “I’ll look at it. Obviously we’ve gotta get a lot fixed, everybody in that locker room, right now.”

Shula initially joined South Carolina’s coaching staff in 2024 as an offensive assistant. His promotion to offensive coordinator followed the departure of Dowell Loggains, who took a head coaching position at Appalachian State.
