LSU Appoints New University President
The search for leadership at Louisiana State University (LSU) has concluded. On November 4, 2023, Wade Rousse was appointed as the university’s 29th president during a meeting of the LSU Board of Supervisors. Rousse, who is currently the president of McNeese State University, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It’s the honor of my life to stand before you today.”
Background of Wade Rousse
Dr. Wade Rousse began his career in the private sector before establishing an alternative investment firm focusing on market strategy. He later became the 8th president of McNeese State University, where he gained valuable experience in university administration. Rousse has emphasized the importance of leveraging his business expertise to secure additional research funding for LSU.
Appointment Details
The vote to appoint Rousse as president was largely favorable, with a tally of 12-1. Board member Laurie Lipsey Aronson cast the only dissenting vote. A press conference is anticipated following this announcement to provide further insights into Rousse’s vision for the university.
Leadership Structure
In addition to Rousse’s appointment, Dr. James Dalton has been named the Executive Vice President of LSU. This role mirrors the responsibilities previously held by chancellors at the university. Dalton, who was the provost at the University of Alabama, was among the top three finalists for the presidency.
Finalists for the Position
- James Dalton, Ph.D. – Provost at the University of Alabama
- Robert Robbins, M.D. – Former President of the University of Arizona
- Matt Lee – Interim President of LSU
- Giovanni Piedimonte – Vice President of Research at Tulane
All finalists participated in interviews with LSU’s student body, faculty, and community leaders prior to Rousse’s selection. This thorough process ensured that the best candidate was chosen to lead LSU into the future.
Predecessor
William Tate, the university’s previous president, departed LSU in May 2023 to assume the presidency at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His departure created a vacancy that prompted the search for a new leader.
The appointment of Wade Rousse is a significant step for LSU as it seeks to advance its academic mission and enhance research funding. His business-oriented approach promises to bring new opportunities for growth at the university.
