In an impressive season opener, Sacramento State women’s basketball team triumphed with a commanding 124-39 victory against Stanton University. This match, held at Hornet Pavilion, marked the first intercollegiate athletic event in the facility’s history.

Key Achievements in the Victory

The Hornets established multiple school records during this game. The 124 points scored are the fourth-most in the program’s history. The team also set a new record for the largest margin of victory at 85 points, surpassing the previous record of 71 points established in a game from 1974.

Defensive Excellence

On defense, the Hornets allowed only 39 points, tying for the third-fewest in their Division I history. This impressive defensive performance is the best since allowing the same number of points in a victory against San Jose State last season.

Record-Breaking Statistics

  • 82 field goals made: a new program record, surpassing the previous record of 50.
  • 33 assists: just one shy of the record set in 2016.
  • 26 steals: approaching the record of 30 from 2015.

Outstanding Player Performances

All 13 players who entered the game contributed by scoring. Sophomore Brooklyn Taylor led the team with a career-high of 19 points. Other notable contributors included:

  • Natalie Picton – 18 points
  • Ajong Lual – 14 points
  • Pinja Paananen – 13 points
  • Elizabeth Abiara – 12 points

Junior Keanna Salave’a led with eight rebounds, while Fatoumata Jaiteh and Lual each recorded seven rebounds. Jaiteh also had a remarkable eight assists, showcasing the team’s collective effort and skill.

Shooting Efficiency

The Hornets achieved a remarkable shooting accuracy of 60.5%, the first time reaching above 60% since early 2023. This offensive efficiency was instrumental in their dominating performance.
