Efforts to clear massive industrial tires from Campbell River Beach, British Columbia, have seen successful collaboration among various organizations. Recently, 11 large tires were removed from the shoreline thanks to local volunteers and regional agencies.
Successful Removal of Industrial Tires
The Greenways Land Trust, a non-profit conservation group, coordinated the removal operations. Camille Andrews, the habitat management co-ordinator for the organization, stated that a tugboat from Coast Island Marine played a crucial role by hauling the tires to a nearby marine terminal. This operation took place on a Monday, marking a significant milestone for environmental efforts on the beach.
Community Involvement
Nearly 30 volunteers had previously gathered to clear Styrofoam debris from the beach. This community spirit has been vital in addressing the environmental challenges posed by the rubber tires, which are approximately four tonnes each. The tires, likely used as part of a dock or barge, had become a threat due to their potential to collapse and break into smaller pieces.
Environmental Concerns
The Greenways Land Trust has raised concerns about the tires being filled with Styrofoam. This material can fragment into tiny pieces, posing significant risks to birds and marine life. Keely Dodds, a representative of the organization, highlighted how such debris adversely affects local wildlife.
Collaboration Among Agencies
The clearance operation involved nine different agencies and companies, showcasing the power of collaboration in environmental conservation. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) provided oversight by deploying a qualified environmental professional to monitor the removal process.
