Orioles Sign Leody Taveras to Boost Roster

Outfielder Leody Taveras is set to join the Baltimore Orioles as part of their roster enhancement efforts. This information was first reported by Mike Rodriguez and later confirmed by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Background on Leody Taveras

Taveras, who previously played five seasons with the Texas Rangers, was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in mid-June of this year. After clearing waivers, he was assigned to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had initially acquired him through a waiver claim from Texas in early May.

Rookie to Recent Performance

Making his MLB debut in 2020, Taveras began as a part-time player. While his batting average struggled during his first three seasons, he showcased notable defensive skills in center field and demonstrated speed on the bases. In 2022, he took on a larger role, appearing in 143 games and collecting substantial plate appearances.

  • 2020-2022: 660 plate appearances
  • 2023: 554 plate appearances, with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases
  • Batting average: .266
  • On-base percentage: .312
  • Slugging percentage: .421

2024 Performance and Arbitration

In the 2024 season, Taveras continued to play a significant role but saw a decline in his offensive output. He logged 529 plate appearances and recorded an 84 wRC+ with a batting average of just .229. Despite this, he achieved a career-high of 23 stolen bases.

Because of his Super Two status, Taveras qualified for arbitration ahead of the 2024 season and earned $2.55 million. He and the Rangers agreed on a deal worth $4.75 million for the 2025 season, although trade rumors surfaced due to luxury tax implications.

Current Status and Orioles’ Plans

Before his departure from Texas, Taveras had a disappointing batting average of .241 over 30 games. After joining the Mariners, he struggled further with a .174 average in 98 plate appearances. The Baltimore Orioles have decided to take a chance on Taveras as a potential depth option in center field.

With Tyler O’Neill expected to return, the Orioles are likely to explore various combinations in the outfield, including Colton Cowser, Dylan Beavers, and Dylan Carlson. Although Taveras faced challenges with Statcast’s Fielding Run Value last season, the Orioles see him as a viable defensive alternative.
