Malta Ranks 12th in World Justice Project’s Safest Countries Index

Malta has proudly secured the 12th position in the World Justice Project’s Safest Countries Index. This remarkable achievement reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and security for its residents.

Decline in Crime Rates

Malta has witnessed a significant drop in crime rates over the years. The incidence of crime decreased from 46 incidents per 1,000 people in 2004 to just 30 per 1,000 today. Experts predict continued reductions will follow in 2024.

Government Commitment to Safety

Byron Camilleri, Malta’s Minister for Security and Trust, underscored the importance of safety. He emphasized that security extends beyond law enforcement; it encompasses the trust between the community and protective services. His vision includes a “Safe Malta” that offers peace of mind to all citizens.

Investment in the Security Sector

  • By 2026, the recurrent budget for security is set to increase from €100 million (2012) to €280 million.
  • €6 million will be dedicated to modernizing police information systems.
  • €9 million will fund the construction of new police stations in:
    • Paola
    • Mosta
    • Sliema
    • Qormi
    • Rabat (Gozo)
  • Upgrades will also include enhancing the police vehicle fleet and expanding security camera coverage in key locations such as Buġibba, Marsa, and Paola.
  • New firefighting vehicles will be provided to the Civil Protection Department, along with upgrades to existing stations.

Future Personnel Agreements

The Maltese government aims to improve working conditions for its security personnel through new sectoral agreements. Following successful agreements for police, soldiers, and correctional service members, an agreement for the Civil Protection Department is on the horizon.

Economic Growth and Family Support

Minister Camilleri concluded by linking Malta’s strong economic performance to government investments in families and future generations. He stated, “We can talk about the future because it is our policy to translate a strong economy into our families, into the future of our children.”

Malta’s progress in terms of security and commitment to creating a safer environment solidify its reputation as one of the safest countries on a global scale.
