Spirit Airlines Ends Rochester Service

Spirit Airlines has announced the cessation of its operations at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, with the final service day scheduled for January 7. This decision follows the airline’s recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time within a year.

Airport Director’s Statement

Andy Moore, the airport director, expressed disappointment regarding Spirit’s departure but extended his best wishes to the airline as it navigates its financial challenges. Spirit first began operating from Rochester in October 2022, offering daily nonstop flights to Orlando, and later adding routes to Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach.

Details of Spirit Airlines’ Financial Restructuring

A spokesperson for Spirit, Cameryn Junck, highlighted that these changes are part of the airline’s strategy to position itself for better future performance. The airline has adjusted its 2026 schedule to align with a more compact operating fleet, focusing on its most successful markets.

Impact on Travelers

Travelers impacted by this change will be contacted about their options, which includes refunds for canceled flights. Southwest Airlines currently services Orlando with two nonstop flights every Saturday, and plans to offer daily flights starting in January. Additionally, Avelo Airlines operates multiple flights weekly to Lakeland/Orlando.

Future of Rochester Airport Services

The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport remains dedicated to collaborating with its airline partners to attract more nonstop services to the Orlando area. The airport aims to enhance travel options for its passengers despite Spirit Airlines’ exit.
