Belize Mission Project Delivers Joy in San Pedro
The Belize Mission Project has recently made a significant impact in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. From October 31 to November 7, 2023, a dedicated team of dental specialists and volunteers provided essential dental services to the community.
Belize Mission Project: A Lifesaving Dental Initiative
This annual initiative has been serving the Belizean community for over 30 years. This year, the team treated hundreds of adults and children, marking another successful mission.
Free Dental Services Offered
The dental clinics operated at the San Pedro Lions Den, located on Barrier Reef Drive. Services were available from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Thursday, and until noon on Friday. Provided treatments included:
- Fillings
- Extractions
- Partial dentures
Community Involvement
Among the professionals were American dentists and local specialists. Notable members included island dentist Dr. Jorge Mauricio Pleitez and Faith Edgar, the former Miss San Pedro 2022–2023. Edgar leads the non-profit organization Smiles 4 Belize and joined the mission on November 5 to conduct a fluoride clinic at Holy Cross Anglican Primary School in the San Mateo subdivision.
Team member Steve Bender noted the positive effects of the fluoride clinics. “We have noticed a significant improvement in the children’s dental health,” he stated. Fluoride treatments are crucial as they help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
Busy Clinics and Community Response
The Lions Den saw a consistent influx of patients throughout the event. “We were busy,” Bender remarked, expressing satisfaction in serving so many residents. Grateful islanders thanked the team for their generosity and care during their visit.
Maintaining Good Oral Health
The dental team emphasized the importance of oral hygiene. They encouraged everyone to:
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss or use interdental cleaners to maintain clean teeth
The Belize Mission Project is committed to continuing its mission. Another visit is scheduled for January 2026, ensuring ongoing support for the dental health of the San Pedro community.
